Irradiation of Aboriginal Art

The beauty of Aboriginal Art attracts buyers from all over the world.

Artwork is shipped to galleries and buyers around Australia and overseas, every day.

Throughout the shipping process there is a need to ensure that every step is taken to ensure the safe arrival of the art to their destination.

Most artwork originates from the Northern Territory and Western Australia.  Steritech has commenced a project to inform as many Aboriginal Art Centres of the benefits Gamma Irradiation can provide, when used as a Quality Control step.

Wooden carvings are susceptible to wood borer infestations and Gamma Irradiation is one of the best forms of decontamination available.

Steritech is currently being utilised by Aboriginal Art Centres and Galleries across Australia and the number is steadily growing.  Irradiation is used as a control measure against wood borers and other timber eating insects.

Artwork is shipped to one of Steritech’s 3 irradiation facilities in Australia and subjected to a low dose of Gamma Irradiation.  No artwork is unpacked as the Gamma Rays penetrate straight through the packaging and the product.  Any potential insects and pest infestations will be eliminated, leaving the product insect-free at point of despatch.

The artwork can then continue on its journey to the final destination.
